Abstract | Brady Minton is a boy with a reputation for not being able to keep secrets. His minister father is an abolitionist while his Virginian mother accepts slavery as part of the natural order. When Brady suspects a neighbor of hiding runaway slaves, he struggles with his decision about what to do. |

Author Biography | Jean Fritz (1915—2017) was born in Hankow, China, to missionary parents from Washington County. In 1986 she won the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for her contributions to children's literature. Lynd Ward (1905-1985) was an illustrator, artist, and wordless story teller known for his work in the development of the graphic novel. He won the Caldecott Medal in 1953. |
