Abstract |
The novel begins on Western Pennsylvania's Allegheny River during the keelboat age. Oliver, a 12-year-old orphan, is “a pygmy among giants” and works the keelboat Blackthorne just above Pittsburgh. When the first steamboat enters the Allegheny River, boatmen lose their jobs and Oliver heads north to Upstate New York for the building of the Erie Canal.
