Author Biography

Jim Kjelgaard (1910-59) was a popular writer of nature books for kids. He was born in New York and raised on a farm in Western Pennsylvania at the border of Potter and McKean counties. He studied at Pottery County's Galeton High School and Syracuse University before quitting in 1938 to focus on writing for outdoor magazines. Forest Patrol, his debut novel, is based on experiences with his brothers when one became a ranger in the Allegheny Mountains. Ralph Ray, Jr. (1920-52), born in Gastonia, North Carolina and educated at Belmont Abbey College, was an artist and illustrator.
