Abstract |
Anna Hostetler, a 23-year-old painter, is expelled from the Lancaster County Amish community of Heaven, Pennsylvania. Her bishop puts her on a bus to Pittsburgh, “The Dark Side of Heaven,” with little money or direction. Anna is offered a place to stay in Verona by Brandy, another passenger. The new household is flagrantly dysfunctional, however, and Anna struggles to improve her living situation, to adapt to “English ways,” and to pursue her goal of a career in the visual arts.
