Follows three protagonists through the Battle of Homestead: Emlyn Phillips is a Welsh immigrant laborer at Open Hearth #2 in Carnegie Steel's Homestead Works; William Oesterling is a physician and Civil War veteran in Homestead; and Karl Bernhard and his son George are German immigrants who eventually replace steelworkers.

Author Biography |
Trilby Busch (1943- ), a retired college professor and journalist, was born in Homestead, Allegheny County. Her great-grandfather died along with three others while restarting a union-sabotaged boiler after the strike which resulted in the Battle of Homestead. Her grandfather worked as a machinist at Machine Shop #2, organized mill baseball teams, and even became friendly with Honus Wagner in sandlot baseball leagues. These legends inspired her to research other local families and to shape a historical novel. She lives in Minneapolis.
