Abstract | When Iron City men enlist in the Civil War, Jed (Benjamin Gardner), an escaped slave from Virginia, and A.W. Stewart, a Pittsburgh minister, also join up. Jed's dog, Jack, is the unit's mascot and actually plays a heroic role. |

Author Biography | Florence Biros (1931-2014), a writer, formed Son-Rise Publications in 1976 to publish a series of historical novels. She lived in New Wilmington, Lawrence County. Edward T. McDougal (1949- ), a director, taught film at Regent University. He lives in Glencoe, Illinois. |
