Abstract |
Former police chief Mario Balzic, retired in the previous two novels, is lured out by an offer: investigate a 17-year-old double-murder case in fictitious Wabash County (likely Bedford or Somerset). There is a drug deal gone bad, two bodies in a hunting cabin, and a corrupt small-town police chief in the Allegheny Mountains. Balzic gets good money, a break from his wife, and a new title: Special Investigator, with state credentials and $35 per hour.
