Abstract

Little is known about Fanny, except that it was set in Pittsburgh and focused on “stage people,” according to Willa Cather scholars Andrew Jewell and Janis Stout. James Woodress, a Cather biographer, claims the manuscript was rejected by the New York publisher Samuel McClure and that Cather thought it was too good to abandon yet not worthy of a revision. Cather destroyed the manuscript after moving to New York in 1912.

Author Biography

Willa Cather (1873-1947) was born in Virginia, raised in Nebraska, and after college, moved to Pittsburgh to work as a journalist and high school teacher from 1896 to 1906. Her Pittsburgh journalism involved reviewing plays and musical performances in the theater district Downtown as well as interviewing "stage people." Cather went on to publish twelve novels, including One of Ours (1922), which won the 1923 Pulitzer Prize.
