Abstract |
Evvie and Ben Muldoone are a childless couple in their early 40s whose marriage, after 16 years, has slowly disintegrated. Their story unfolds empathetically in shifting points of view between the spouses. Ben has fallen out of love. After 9/11, Ben dreams of a different sort of life in Pittsburgh or even another place, and tells Evvie that he is leaving her. Evvie feels wounded, mourns her loss, grieves, panics, and then obsesses about plots to win back Ben's love and to lure him home.
