Abstract | “This rousing adventure set in 1852 Pittsburgh,” notes Kirkus Reviews, “introduces readers to Owen and Zach, two boys from a poor white family who have been abandoned into the care of an orphanage.” Owen, 13, takes off and stows away on a circus boat docked on the Allegheny River, soon heading for New Orleans. Owen finds refuge with Solomon, a circus animal keeper and ex-slave. Like Huck Finn, Owen learns maturity on the river journey with Solomon. The story returns to Pittsburgh when Owen learns that his brother has been adopted back in the Iron City. |
