This story is told by three separate narrators: Candace Jack, local matriarch and mine owner; Kyle Hayes, an orphan teen; and Luis, a Spaniard who now lives in the town. When their blue-collar drunk father dies in a car accident, Kyle and Klint Hayes, teen brothers, are taken in and given a chance by Candace on her estate. In the 1950s, Candace loved a Spanish bullfighter. Now she keeps a magnificent bull on her farm in memory of her lost love.

Tawni O'Dell (1964- ) was born and raised in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, which her four novels mimic. She graduated from Indiana Area High School and earned a degree in journalism at Northwestern University. She lives in State College, Centre County.
