Abstract |
Eddie Lawson, 30, an ex-postal worker and drug addict, returns home to Pittsburgh after a year of rehabilitation, but his enraged and crippled mother thrusts him back on the streets. The novel covers 24 hours, with many flashbacks, in the life of a black man who discovers he “can't go home again.” “Mr. Wideman approaches poetry in passages,” says Kirkus Reviews, “but his characters are firmly rooted in reality. Experience painfully, painstakingly rendered.”
