Sequel to The Tempering (1983). Follows two working-class boys: Hank Kerner, who considers himself All-American, and his best friend Bazyli Radichevych, a Ukrainian immigrant whom Hank nicknames Billy Radish. The best friends plan to enter the steel mill when they turn 14.

Author Biography |
Gloria Skurzynski (1930— ), educated at Duquesne High School and Carlow College, was born the daughter of a steelworker in Duquesne, Allegheny County. “As a child, I thought the smell of mill smoke in the air was natural and rather pleasant.” She's written more than 60 books for kids.
