Abstract
Jeremiah Henderson and his girlfriend Willet Mercer aim to escape and to reach Manhattan’s bright lights. Three hundred dollars, they think, will do it. A hustler named Tommy Moses offers cash for a trick from Willet, but when she changes her mind, things spiral, and Moses is knifed. The lovers bolt with Moses’ cash and Buick to Wilmington, North Carolina, where Willet had abandoned a child.
