Abstract |
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, John Dante, 17, is smitten by patriotism and eager to enlist. The government quickly dispatches his father, a Pitt physics professor, to perform classified research in California, while his sister is pregnant and engaged to two different soldiers. Then John falls in love with Ginny Burton, who begs him to become a conscientious objector. John enlists, endures active combat, and does not communicate with Ginny again for over 40 years.
