Abstract |
Lonnie James, 23, a laid-off black steelworker is falsely accused, convicted, and sentenced to death for the murder of a white drugstore owner. Feeling failed by his court-appointed lawyers, Lonnie seeks the help of three black inmates jailed for being Communist Party labor organizers, who smuggle messages to an outside defense committee.
