Abstract

Set in Lakeside, a fictitious pioneer community near Presque Isle. Mr. Eaton sets up a church in the wilderness, does missionary work in the Northwest Territories that are to be Ohio, and then travels to Laurel Hill to find his true love. After they marry, they go back to Lakeside to begin his ministry anew.

Notes

Laurel Ridge is referred to as Laurel Hill, as it is often known.

Based on the lives of the author’s parents: Rev. Johnston Eaton (1776-1847) and Elizabeth Canon (1780-1872).

Author Biography

Samuel John Mills Eaton (1820-89), born in Fairview, Erie County, graduated from Washington & Jefferson College and the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. A Presbyterian minister, for many years he served as pastor in Franklin, Venango County and wrote a number of books.
