Abstract |
Set during the Pittsburgh newspaper strike of the 1990s. Victor Cole, a machinist who loses his job and recovers as a full-time jazz musician, meets Maggie Higgins, a gynecologist who runs the Liberty Avenue Women’s Clinic. "The character of Maggie Higgins," says the author's note, "is a fictionalized reflection of Margaret Higgins Sanger (1883-1966), the American birth control leader and one of the founders of Planned Parenthood. Events in this novel are based on Sanger's life, her personality, and her politics."
