Abstract |
On September 10, 2001, Tom Coleman is a freshman studying for PSATs in Baclwater, a fictitious town near Somerset, Somerset County. When an attempted robbery hits his father’s grocery store, a great “plague” begins to spread over the region: United Airlines Flight 93, meth dens spreading like wildfire, addicts walking like zombies, and the Quecreek mine disaster. Tom’s English teacher reacts by having the school read Daniel Defoe's A Journal of the Plague Year and watch George Romero's Night of the Living Dead.
