Abstract |
Eleven-year-old Nathan McClelland’s small farming community is transformed into a mining town flush with immigrants. Despite his family’s warnings, Nathan befriends Arturo Tozzi, an Italian boy who works alongside his father and brother in the mine, and vows to help him become “a real American.” The novel takes place in Manorville in fictitious Gallatin County, likely a stand-in for Fayette County.
