Abstract |
The Charlestown Chiefs, a minor league hockey team, are perennial losers. When the local steel mill lays off 10,000 workers, Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman), the Jets’ aging player/coach, provokes his players to violent methods to increase attendance and a winning streak follows.

Nancy Dowd (1945— ), born in Framingham, Massachusetts, was educated at UCLA. She is the screenwriter of more than a dozen films, including Coming Home (1979), which won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Dowd’s brother, Ned, played hockey for the Johnstown Jets.
