Abstract
Milo Kachigan is a detective who had concealed his Armenian heritage in order to rise in the Irish-controlled police bureau. Helen Sorby, an energetic social worker and reporter for a socialist paper, dedicates herself to Pittsburgh’s swelling population of immigrant laborers. After a blast and a fierce fire kills a Polish couple in a Hunky tenement on Breed Street, Milo and Helen investigate and a relationship develops. The case leads them through the East End, Market Square, the Strip District, the Hill District, Ambridge, and ends in a Troy Hill cemetery. The historical accuracy of Cercone's novels is brilliant.
