Abstract |
This film adaption of the 1942 novel chronicles four generations of the Scott family—owners and operators of a competitive iron and steel company—from the economic panic of 1873 through the rise of American industry and trade unionism, waves of immigration, class conflict, natural disasters, and two World Wars. Mary Rafferty (Greer Garson), the family's long-serving and trusted Irish maid, is a central character.

Author Biography |
John Meehan (1890-1954) was born in Canada, where he worked in theater. He moved to Hollywood in 1929 and wrote three dozen screenplays. He died in Los Angeles. Sonya Levien (1888-1960), born in Russia, immigrated to New York City and graduated from New York University Law School, then shifted to writing. She is credited to more than 70 screenplays.
