Abstract
The Burd family leaves its eastern Pennsylvania farm to seek cheap land at Losantiville (now Cincinnati). Pittsburgh chapters depict how pioneers transferred their belongings to flatboats. The Burds also meet Mary Moore, a Pittsburgh girl who had been an Indian captive.

Author Biography
Enid La Monte Meadowcroft (1898-1966), born in New York, taught elementary school, wrote radio scripts, and edited children's books for Grosset. She published more than 25 historical novels for kids.
