Abstract | The melodramatic romance depicts Washington approaching Ft. Duquesne with the Braddock Expedition and rescuing Marion—a fair maiden who lives in the forest near the Monongahela River—from the unwanted advances of Michael “Red Wolf” Burke. Washington and Marion fall in love, but then he must rejoin his Virginia regiment. When after the battle Washington returns to fetch her, he finds Marion dead and scalped. |
