Tom Crick (Jeremy Irons) is a British ex-pat and high school history teacher struggling with his past. Crick responds to a student's question about the meaning of history with a parable based on a long story about his own young adulthood in the Fen district of England. Those emotional wounds continue to damage his relationship with his wife and his job.
