Abstract

Follows an Irish family from Ulster struggling on the frontier at the Forks of the Ohio. In a subplot George Washington, who is passing through on his historic mission of 1753, falls in love with a Pittsburgh maiden named Maria Frazier. When she refuses him, Washington rededicates himself to passion for his country.

Solomon Secondsight is a pseudonym of James McHenry (1785-1845).

Lawrenceville is referred to as Shannopin Town, as it was then known.

Author Biography

James McHenry (1785-1845), born in Ireland, was educated in Glasgow and Dublin and by 1817 practiced medicine in Philadelphia. In 1842 he was appointed U. S. counsel in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, a post he held until his death.
