C6 -The author (1929-2012) was born Phillip Barker and took the name Muhammad Abd-al-Rahman Barker when he converted to Islam. He also used M. A. R. Barker. He earned doctorate in linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley, taught at Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University until 1972, and then at the University of Minnesota, where he chaired the Department of South Asian Studies (since disbanded) until his retirement. He is also known for creating an early role-playing game, Empire of the Petal Throne that was based on Tékumel, a fantasy world he created, where he set five novels.
