Those who consider themselves True humans determine which of their offspring are Lost; i.e. not human, and must be exposed in the Wildlands or sold. The novel concerns a girl who is sold by her father, and her brother searches for her and what they discover. The novel ends with the brother, who has wandered for years in the Wildlands, learning about the many communities that have grown up, finding his sister, living in a community that has become her home.
