Most of the novel centers on two dystopias, Earth as it is torn apart by ethnic, national, and religious conflict and the first settlement on Mars which, in addition to national tensions, produces only stillborn children. The novel ends, though, with the arrival on Mars of evolved humans from the future come back to ensure the survival of the Mars settlement.
