The story is set in a future Eritrea, where \“the Great Drying\” has turned much of the country into a desert, and one ethnic group, the Afar, have built immense towers where they collect mist to provide water. The story focuses on a young woman who tries to convince her elders that the Great Drying is ending, and it is time to return to the land.
