Authoritarian dystopia set on Mars. Mars lacks food and water but is technologically advanced. The inhabitants of Mars are without emotion. Unless they are granted an extension based on the value of their work, they must die after a specified number of years to make room for the young. The protagonist, 774, must die because his work, the study of Earth, is considered unimportant. First in a loosely linked series.
