Dystopia set in New Zealand in which the government is erasing the history of each individual and the country, a process known as dehistorising. Kafkaesque elements with the narrator appearing before an ever-changing Tribunal. He then becomes part of the "Game of Life" in which he is hunted as he searches for his wife and family, who have been taken by the authorities, with the Game providing entertainment for the people. See also his 1992 "The Don'ts of Whistling."
