The novel is set in a future Aotearoa/New Zealand that has experienced a devastating environmental collapse and follows the experiences of one Pākehā man who travels across the country with a few Māori in search of connections among people and the possibility of rebuilding the country. In the future, and in the text, people are bilingual in English and Māori and use the languages as if they were one.
