The complex novel concerns an archipelago off the coast of Scotland and tells the story of a gynotopia. Cwen is the old English word for “woman, wife, female, ruler of a state” (1), and in the novel Cwen is a goddess or ancient spirit who oversees the islands, which have become a gynotopia where women, including nonbinary and trans, rule, own the businesses, take care of their families, and try to create a better world. Much of the action of the novel concerns a hearing after the disappearance of the woman who founded it in which men try to bring it to an end. |
