The author (1921-2003) was born and raised in England. During World War 2, he was court-marshaled for his objections to the treatment of an African prisoner and sentenced to three years, from which he was released on his agreeing to spy for British intelligence. He moved to South Africa in 1948, which expelled him in 1954 for his opposition to apartheid, when he moved to Ireland.
