The author (b. 1938) was born Colin Johnson and took the Aboriginal name of Mudrooroo Nyoongah but was forced to drop the Nyoongah; he legally changed his name to Mudrooroo in 1988. He has also used the names Colin Johnson Mudrooroo, Colin Johnson Nyoongah, and Mudrooroo Narogin. His claim of Aboriginal identity is disputed by some and supported by others.
