Full Text | 2000 Glyde, Tania. Junk DNA. Dystopia produced by genetic engineering. In a world about to be turned upside down by the Human Genome Project, unconventional sex therapist Regina incorporates stolen pharmaceuticals into her work. Not one of her best ideas; all the women she treats develop a terrifying aversion to children. Disillusioned, she embarks on a work of scientific satire, a living exhibition of genetic poetry starting with mice and working up the evolutionary scale. Lucy, Regina's ten year old neighbour, is a dyslexic, creative genius, born into a family on the wrong side of dysfunctional. As society starts to fall apart, Lucy quits school, orphans herself, and sets to work as Regina's assistant. Lucy becomes a very powerful little girl, and life gets more twisted by the day. Finally, when human beings have tinkered with nature once too often, Junk DNA reaches an apocalyptic climax. The author is a psychotherapist specializing with the London Gender, Sex, and Diversity Relationship Practice who uses the pronoun they and was Time Out’s sex columnist from 2002-2004. |
