Annotation | Scientists develop a way of manipulating plants that makes it possible to produce a food called Freefood. A large corporation supports the development and distribution of Freefood while making immense profits. Various problems arise with the plants, and with the fact that feeding the entire world adequately is not enough to make everyone happy. Much of the novel is set in Australia, where the Aboriginals are establishing a new state in in northern Australia carved out of Queensland called Murngin, where they practice the old ways without the Freefood or alcohol.
