The novel is set 1849 in Virginia, which is caught between the South, which has peacefully seceded, and a North ruled by Martin Van Buren (1782-1862. President 1837-41), who is seeking a fourth term in office. From 1933 until his death, the author was Professor of Law at William and Mary College, publishing prolifically in support of the rights of states against the national government, which is the theme of the novel.
