The female author (1864-1922) was born in the U.S., married a French count, and, after his death, lived much of her life in England. She initially was best-known as a singer and while in England toured to India, Australia, and South Africa. She later travelled again to South Africa, which provided the setting for some of her later books, including this one. She was an initiate of The Order of the Golden Dawn.
