The author (1844-1912) was born in Germany and lived in France, Britain, Mexico, Aotearoa/New Zealand and the US before returning to Germany. In Aotearoa/New Zealand, where he lived from 1898 to 1905, he opened commercial exchange banks in Wellington and Auckland. He was also involved with the Topolobampo community in Mexico.
