Abstract |
Rocksburg’s steel plant is downsizing, then moved south to Brazil. When CEO James Deford Lyon is found shot in the trunk of his Jaguar, Sergeant Ruggiero “Rugs” Carlucci—former police chief Mario Balzic’s self-deprecating protégé—is quickly besieged by national media. The suspects—hundreds who lost their jobs—also include the union leaders who cooperated with the plant closing. In a subplot, Carlucci’s mother’s violent outburst leads her to the mental hospital; his partner is operating behind his back, hoping to nail the killer and gain a promotion; and his relationship with psychiatric social worker Franny Perfetti, a gorgeous, one-time Miss Pennsylvania runner-up, is coming to a crossroad.
