A climate change dystopia that gives a good picture of life without most of the amenities of the past for those who survive living in the remains of a university and the wild area surrounding it. The protagonist, a young woman, has a fungal disease that can control her thoughts, write things on or skin, and kill her, as do many others in her community. She is admitted to a prestigious university community that has cut itself off from the rest of the world, and the novel ends with her trip there. Described as the first volume of a series. The second volume is We Speak Through the Mountain. Toronto, ON, Canada: ECW Press, 2024. In it the protagonist of the first volume arrives at the university. There is a deep divide between those, like her, invited from the outside and those who were born and raised at the university, and she keeps challenging it and other of the many rules that control everyone’s life. The third and, it is said, final volume is The First Thousand Trees. Toronto, ON, Canada: ECW Press, 2025. It follows a friend of the previous protagonist who leaves the community but ends up in a despotic community, and the novella traces the changes he goes through.
