A future technological eutopia set in Toronto and, primarily, Ottawa in 1999, although the first part of the book is set during the 1896 federal election. In the eutopia, Canada is independent but with close ties to Britain. Christian. Social equality. Cooperation. Shorter work hours possible due to advanced technology. No monopolies. Free trade among English-speaking nations. Work farms for the poor and idle. Limits on immigration. Single tax on land based on the ideas of Henry George (1839-1897). For Henry George's explanation of the single tax, see his Progress and Poverty. An Inquiry Into the Cause of Industrial Depressions and Of Increase of Want With Increase of Wealth. The Remedy. The editor of the reprint identifies the author as John Galbraith (1846-1914), Professor of Engineering at the School of Practical Sciences, and the first Dean when it became the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. The identification is based on the emphasis on technology but could find no concrete evidence, and he was not a Barrister-at-Law.
