A version of the sleeper awakes utopia in that the protagonist, a banker, escapes to the Canadian wilderness at the time of the bank crash of March 1933 and it is five years later that he learned what had happened. The government realized that the proposed New Deal was inadequate and that a completely new system was needed and that the profit system had to go. It was replaced by a cooperative commonwealth based on 1888 Bellamy influenced by Technocracy. No banks. Money replaced with “short term production certificates (15). No taxes, no credit, no interest. Technologically advanced. Although called a revolution, the change brought about peacefully, considerable detail on the changes made and how they were made. |
