First volume in a series. Following a few individuals, this volume describes the dystopian conditions create by climate change. The coasts of the U.S. are mostly gone; e.g. Long Island is no more, constant hurricanes, higher and higher heat, regular tornadoes make much of the Midwest uninhabitable. The wealthy have left for space but rely on Earth for food. On Earth the solution is to build six fortified, completely contained cities that will house three million people each, with the rest left to the wilderness. The second volume is The Shutouts. A Novel. New York: St. Martin’s Press, 2024. 304 pp., which is obviously about those forced to live in the wilderness and concerns, in varied timelines, members of a family trying to reunite. Both novels have queer themes. |
